Berlin is not only one of the most exciting cities in Europe – it is also a melting pot of nations, celebrated for its diversity. People from 189 countries call the capital home, and more than 18 percent of Berliners are foreign nationals. Many of them bring a piece of their homeland and their culture with them to Berlin. And one of the most important cultural assets, alongside language, is food.
50 kitchens. 50 stories. 50 times a wooden spoon in the hands of someone who brought a taste of home to Berlin. Over nine months, Stephanie Drescher and Uwe Schwarze built an entire TV series from the ground up for Deutsche Welle – editorial development, camera, editing, narration scripts, book texts, everything.
We drove across half of Berlin, discovered restaurants no travel guide has ever heard of, and tasted dishes that don't even have a name in German yet. We produced, stored, reviewed, evaluated and edited over 250 hours of footage into 50 five-minute films. It was loud, colourful, sometimes spicy – and one of the best projects we have ever made.
In 2016, Basiliscus Film produced this 50-part TV series for the Deutsche Welle lifestyle magazine euromaxx within the space of a year. In doing so, we got to know Berlin's gastronomic diversity far better than we ever had before – meeting the city's finest cooks and restaurateurs, watching over their shoulders and peering into their pots.
The result: 50 films about people who came to Berlin for very different reasons. 50 films that serve as a gastronomic guide to the city – and at the same time present 50 recipes to cook at home.
»50 Kitchens, One Home« – Basiliscus Film produced 50 magazine features over nine months on behalf of Deutsche Welle for the lifestyle magazine euromaxx.
Stephanie Drescher was responsible for editing, research and organisation, whilst Uwe Schwarze handled camera work and post-production. Together, we filmed in 50 Berlin kitchens, wrote all the voice-over scripts and penned the text for the accompanying publication. 50 people, 50 recipes, 50 stories about home, cooking and life in one of the world’s most diverse cities.
Bangkok meets Charlottenburg – and what happens in Dao's kitchen is something you can't explain, only film. For our 50-part TV series »50 Kitchens, one City«, produced on behalf of Deutsche Welle, Basiliscus Film visited the kitchens, restaurants and living rooms of people from all over the world – and learned along the way that food is the most honest form of home.
Good vibrations, lots of fun, traditional Thai food and a little bit of sun: Pratina Kross would like to bring all this to Berlin. After spending a day with her at her Dao by Meo restaurant in Charlottenburg, we know she's fulfilling all of her wishes. Pratina, when she came to Germany in 1997, was first disappointed by her new home. She thought everything is pink and beautiful. But it was cold, constantly dark, she did not understand the language, and knew no one. But the Thai woman has a rather sunny disposition and at the same time is a very good businesswoman. Ambitiously, she pursues her goals. Beside her restaurant, she also runs a cooking school. Here, Pratina prepares for us a yellow curry with chicken according to an old family recipe. Delicious!
Ropa Vieja in Schöneberg – that's the kind of discovery you only make if you know where to ask. For our TV series »50 Kitchens, one City«, produced for Deutsche Welle euromaxx, we followed tips from insiders rather than tourist guides, and found La Pequeña Habana tucked away in a quiet corner of the neighbourhood. What looked unassuming from the outside turned out to be one of the warmest episodes of the entire series: a Cuban couple cooking their national dish with the kind of passion that no script could have written.
Fifty episodes like this one – each researched, filmed, edited and delivered broadcast-ready by our Berlin film production team. The camera was always rolling at the right moment, and the story always came from the people, not the other way around.
Finding a restaurant in Berlin that serves good Cuban food wasn’t exactly easy. Thanks to a tip from a chef friend, we discovered La Pequeña Habana in Schöneberg. Rather unassuming from the outside, inside guests are treated to excellent cuisine and a great deal of passion for gastronomy. Iris Garofalo embodies this in the service, her husband Eric in the kitchen. For the TV series 50 Kitchens, One Home, we cooked the Cuban national dish, Ropa Vieja, together – a beef dish prepared in a special way.
But the avocado salad and the daily fresh fish dish are also absolute delicacies. For Iris and Eric, running their own restaurant is an absolute dream, they tell us. “Food plays a huge role in Cuba. We’re family people. We love eating together and we enjoy our food. We all gather round the table and tell each other how our day went, chatting about everything. No matter what happens, we enjoy our food.” During our filming, lots of Cubans ate at Iris and Eric’s, sharing stories and enjoying themselves. A good sign, we think.

Not every cuisine makes headlines. Slovak cuisine least of all. Which makes what we discovered in Berlin all the more surprising: dishes that taste of grandmothers and of a country most people only know from a map. This episode of our TV series »50 Kitchens, one City« is one of 50 – and one of the quiet discoveries of the entire project.
Vanda Molnár's grandmother was born in Berlin, but she emigrated to Slovakia many years ago because of a big love. The love for cooking is deeply manifested in Vanda's family. Vanda Molnár's mother is an enthusiastic chef, and she passed this passion on to her daughter. The funny thing is: Vanda moved from Bratislava to Berlin 16 years ago, right into the footsteps of her grandmother. In Berlin, she now runs her restaurant »platz doch!« together with Silvia Pintérová, who was also born in Bratislava. By the way, both were born in the same hospital in 1976, only with one day difference. The two chefs offer Slow Food, inspired by the Slovakian way of cooking. The restaurant has a very beautiful minimalistic design and an open show kitchen, where Vanda and Silvia prepare their tasty dishes.
They serve natural wines from their home country and other regions of Central and Eastern Europe. Vanda regularly visits her home country to buy ingredients from small farmers, organic winegrowers and small organic farms. They get the fresh products from regional small businesses in Berlin and Brandenburg. »platz doch!« is much more than just a place to eat well. The two chefs want to convey food culture from their Slovakian homeland. »platz doch!« Is not only a restaurant, it is much more, a shop, a meeting place where you can make friends and also an event agency. If you like, you can rent the room for pop-up events and celebrations.

Everyone knows fish and chips. What British cuisine is truly capable of, very few people realise. For this episode of our series production »50 Kitchens, one City«, we dug a little deeper – and found a version of British food that doesn't appear in any cliché. Fifty times our camera team and we drove across Berlin looking for exactly these kinds of stories.
Caroline Grinsted likes to read cookbooks. When she gets up in the morning, she thinks about what she wants to cook for lunch, or wants to eat, her husband Tobias tells us. Food plays just a prominent role in the life of the chef. If she does not eat, she ponders about new recipes. Her passion is boundless and her motto probably the basis of her success: »I meal that is unenjoyable is a wasted experience. It is something we all need to do, to eat to keep ourselves alive, but given that we need to do it, we should make it as nice as we possibly can.« This is how Caroline and Tobias started the experiment to run a supper club – to cook at home and invite strangers. The concept quickly became a restaurant, the »Muse«. For us, Caroline prepared »Chicken Tikka Masala«, one of the new national dishes in the UK. Say again, the British can not cook!

When Brazilians cook, they don't just cook – they celebrate. Capturing that energy without staging it was the real challenge of this episode. As a Berlin film production company, we know: the best moments happen when the camera simply rolls. »50 Kitchens, one City« is proof of that, fifty times over.
Sabine Hueck has a very special gift: she brings people together. People of all nationalities and generations. Her Atelier Culinário is an extraordinary place where you can enjoy Brazilian cuisine (every dish is delicious), where you can have engaging conversations and get to know interesting people. At the end of the day, you will leave this place more than happy. “For me, it's not just about food. It's about everything. For example, how to welcome people, how to cover the table, all these small details. It's social, as in a living room, like a big family“, says Sabine Hueck. And when you are with her, you feel exactly what she means.

Poland and Berlin share a history older than any kitchen. For this episode of our TV series »50 Kitchens, one City«, we went looking for what really ends up on Polish plates – far beyond Bigos clichés and tourist menus. Fifty such journeys of discovery Basiliscus Film produced, shot and edited for Deutsche Welle euromaxx within a single year.
Even as a teenager, Karol A. Kasierski liked to cook the traditional dishes of his grandparents. So it was obvious that the Pole started a cooking education. But after half a year he gave up, somehow he did not like to spend all day in the kitchen. Karol studied marketing, worked as an event manager and communication strategist. On a trip to his homeland, he noticed a Polish restaurant chain. He wanted something like that in Berlin too! He developed a strategy: Polish street food, interpreted in a modern way.
In the tak tak, his Polish deli, Karol A. Kasierski of course offers pierogi with very different fillings, of course also vegetarian and vegan. »This is absolut necessary in Berlin«, says the restaurant manager. But Polish cuisine has much more to offer. With us, he cooked Zurek, a sour rye soup, and his favorite dish. With so much love for food, it is not surprising that Karol – although over detours – but then ended up in a restaurant.

Sunshine on the plate, the sea somewhere in the memory – and in the middle of it all, a Berlin kitchen that smells of oregano and olive oil. Greek food always carries a story with it. Telling that story without over-romanticising it is the craft that defines our video production work. This episode is one of our favourites from the entire series.
“My parents moved to a foreign country, and I was born here, but they did not want my brother and me to forget where we came from. That's why they taught us the Greek culture – the language, the food,” Athanasios Gortsas tells us when we meet him for the series “50 Kitchens, one city” at the Taverna Ousia. The ancient Greek tradition plays an important role in the restaurant, which is specialized on Mezedes, small dishes that have a great advantage: you can try something of everything. Typical Greek is also the lamb shoulder in red wine sauce, which we have prepared together. One eats it with fresh vegetables.

Tapas, wine and the ability to make a great deal out of very little – Spanish cuisine is an attitude towards life. For our award-winning TV series »50 Kitchens, one City«, Basiliscus Film filmed that attitude in a Berlin kitchen and realised: homesickness tastes the same everywhere. Over 250 hours of footage were produced in this project and distilled into 50 films.
A passionate chef and a sommelier meet in Berlin and quickly realize that they share the same idea of a really good restaurant. They love to establish a place that stands out. So they open a gastrobar. Well known in their homeland Spain, in Berlin a unique selling point. They offer small, extraordinary dishes to share, plus the right beverage selection and a great deal of coziness. And everyone feels like being at a friends dining room. “To create something new in the kitchen, you have to understand the tradition,” says head chef Ager Uriguen.
So for 50 kitchens, one city he prepares Bacalao al pil pil, a traditional Basque dish, and Giovanni Gonzalez Miranda serves the right wine. “Eating, friends, laughing, drinking, that's just part of our culture. All this we can combine here in our restaurant”, adds the sommelier. Let's go to Neukölln, to friends, to Txokoa!

Island vibes in Berlin-Kreuzberg – that sounds like a contradiction and turns out to be one of the most beautiful episodes of our entire series. Caribbean cuisine is loud, colourful and generous: exactly what Berlin sometimes needs. As a film production company from Berlin, we captured 50 such encounters between world cuisine and the neighbourhood for Deutsche Welle euromaxx – and this one left us particularly inspired.
Jamaican, that is: Every occasion is celebrated, whether big or small. And celebrating means eating and drinking. Kirk Henry and Troy Lopez bring this principle from their home country Jamaica to Berlin and realize it in their restaurant RosaCaleta. “As a child I grew up in a house where the doors were always open, no matter what the occasion was, it was always a kind of party.
That's why there is always something to eat when I invite people. Because good food always creates good mood, and good mood always make a good talk”, says chef Troy Lopez during our shooting for the series 50 kitchens, one city for DW last summer. Troy and managing director Kirk live this principle, that one notices quickly when you see them in their restaurant and spend somme time with them.
