WHEN ATTITUDE NEEDS A FILM

Social media content for the »Schule ohne Rassismus - Schule mit Courage« association

Two Films on Remembrance Culture, Migration and Postcolonial Memory – for Social Media and Website

The association Aktion Courage e.V. – the organisation behind the school programme »Schule ohne Rassismus – Schule mit Courage« (Schools Without Racism – Schools With Courage) – commissioned us to produce two short documentary films. Both films are aimed at young people, actively involve them, and connect historical depth with Berlin's present. Each film was produced in a dual-format approach: a web video (16:9) for website and YouTube, complemented by a compact 9:16 social media clip for Instagram and other short-form platforms – designed for each channel from the very start.

Film A »Berlin – A City of Immigration«

Berlin has been a city of immigration for centuries. This is not a claim – it is a historical fact, and the starting point of this film. The story is told by Seif Wahdan and Sanem Kleff, the authors of the book Stadt der Vielfalt (City of Diversity), who guide us through Berlin's history: from the Huguenots in the 17th century, through Jewish life, the persecutions of the Nazi era, the recruitment of guest workers and contract labourers in the GDR, to today's city, where almost a quarter of the population has international roots – more than 940,000 people.

Alongside them, students from the Robert-Jungk-Oberschule in Berlin-Wilmersdorf share their perspectives. They speak from their everyday lives: about friendships across cultural boundaries, their own experiences of migration, and what connects them to Berlin. The film closes with a collective call to action: one by one, the students step in front of the camera and say – each in their own way – »Ich bin Berlin.« (I am Berlin.)

Film B »Reading the Postcolonial City«

Why do so many of Berlin's streets and squares still bear the names of those who profited from colonial crimes? And what does that mean for the people who pass those signs every day?

Amina Fall and Tahir Della from the Initiative Schwarze Menschen in Deutschland (ISD – Initiative of Black People in Germany) take us on a walk through the Wedding district. At the Nettelbeckplatz – which has still not been renamed – and along the Cornelius-Fredericks-Straße, they make Berlin's colonial legacy visible in the cityscape.

That change is possible is shown by places such as Manga-Bell-Platz, Anna-Mungunda-Allee and Maji-Maji-Allee – streets that have already been renamed to acknowledge colonial injustice. The film combines an activist walk through the city with a clear message: the colonial legacy is not the past. It is the present. And it can be changed.

How We Worked

Both projects were developed through intensive research and close collaboration with Aktion Courage e.V. The storyboard for each film was created together with the client before a single shot was filmed.

For Film A, the script drew on the book Stadt der Vielfalt; for Film B, we accompanied Amina Fall and Tahir Della on a real activist walk through Berlin's neighbourhoods. Each film was shot in a single day – using Sony FX6 and FX30, our own sound and lighting equipment, 2D graphic animations in After Effects, and post-production in DaVinci Resolve.
