We love documentaries because they give us the freedom to tell a story from our own personal perspective. This is in line with the motto of American film critic Bill Nichols, who once said that documentary filmmaking is the »creative engagement with reality.« Such work often takes months, sometimes years, and requires intensive preparation and research.
During filming, we always embark on a journey of discovery into the lives of other people, encountering surprises and becoming adventurers for a time. In the best case scenario, the camera becomes a silent observer. This results in footage that cannot be planned. That is precisely what makes this film genre so exciting. Nevertheless, the question always remains: to what extent can situations be portrayed realistically as soon as a camera is pointed at them? An exciting point, we think.
