Travelling with a German designer in East London
East End Encounters – Architecture and Design
The former working-class neighbourhood is now home to studios and workshops for designers and artists in old factories and warehouses. The initially very favourable rents in the East End attracted many creative minds.
Hamburg designer Gitta Gschwendtner has lived in London for 20 years. After studying at Central Saint Martins, Kingston University and the Royal College of Art, the artist fell in love with the city so much that she stayed. She has had her studio in the East End for 14 years. In 1998, she founded her own design studio. She designs furniture, lamps, shelves, vases and much more. She has also made a name for herself as an exhibition architect – for the Victorian Albert Museum, for example. She shows us the first signs of gentrification in the East End.
